Overview

Propel is an AI-driven healthcare assistant prototype created at the 6th annual BioHack hosted by BMEs of OSU. It combines speech recognition, language models, and pragmatic UX design to reduce friction during patient intake and to provide multilingual, empathetic interactions that support clinical workflows.

"Propel isn't about replacing clinicians — it's about giving them time back by making routine communication frictionless." — Kuldeep

Key Features

  • Voice-first interaction model for hands-free patient engagement.
  • Multilingual dialogue handling to serve non-English speakers.
  • Structured intake and context-carrying conversations that reduce repeated questions.

Applications

  • Faster, privacy-conscious patient intake and triage.
  • Assistive frontline interface in clinics, pop-up health events, and telehealth.
  • Accessibility layer for patients who struggle with text-based forms.

Tech Stack

PythonSpeech-to-text & TTSLarge language models (LLM)RESTful APIs

Key Achievements

  • Rapidly prototyped and demoed at a major university BioHack event.
  • Demonstrated robust multilingual and voice flows in constrained environments.
  • Produced a recorded demo that communicates design intent and capabilities (moreUrl).

Impact

Propel’s core impact is operational: reducing repetitive administrative work and improving patient communication. In prototype trials, the voice-based intake reduced manual form entry and re-asking of standard questions — freeing staff to focus on higher-value clinical tasks and improving patient satisfaction with clearer, more immediate communication.
